The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) of Thailand has successfully concluded its 5G spectrum auctions on Sunday which raised a total of 100.52 billion baht (US$3.2 billion).
Advanced Info Service, the country’s top mobile operator, was the biggest hitter as it won 23 licenses across all three spectrum bands namely 700MHz range, 2600MHz and 26GHz.
It was followed by True Move H Universal Communication Plc (True Move H) which bagged a total of 17 licenses, nine on 2600MHz and another eight on 26GHz.
Two state-run operators, CAT Telecom Plc and TOT Plc, which participated in the auction for the first time were able to win six licenses combined.
Norway’s Total Access Communication Plc (DTAC), which only joined the bidding on high band 26GHz, won two licenses.
The telecoms regulator said a total of 48 licenses were auctioned with the final price on the range reaching 1.95 billion baht per license.
Channel News Asia reported that firms who claimed victory on 700-MHz and 2600-MHz bands are required to pay the government over a decade period, in 10 and seven installments respectively. While those who won 26-GHz licenses are obliged to pay the full amount within 12 months.
The commercial rollout of 5G services in Thailand is expected later this year.
According To NBTC, this new technology will improve the country’s digital sector as it allows data speed of up to 100 times faster than 4G networks.
